INTRODUCTION

Since the inception of the consumer vehicle infotainment aftermarket, it has revolved around the 1-DIN or 2-DIN replacement head unit, bringing new capacities and functionalities to a small proportion of older registered vehicles. Decades ago, this was confined to audio-only receivers, but typical units available in more recent years feature large color LCDs for display-audio purposes, Bluetooth connectivity, and digital map visualization and route guidance for aftermarket navigation.

However, the largely plodding infotainment aftermarket has recently been shaken by a number of emerging trends. These include the increasing number of connected head units, currently being made available through a variety of different smartphone integration protocols, but with scope for embedded solutions going forward, and the arrival of various new form factors, such as onboard diagnostics (OBD) dongles and heads-up displays (HUDs).

It is also important to bear in mind that this progression in connectivity and form factor within the aftermarket is not occurring in a vacuum, but rather against the backdrop of a much wider connected car revolution. Indeed, this can be viewed as a trickle-down effect from OEM-equipped systems into the aftermarket. Critically, as was discussed in ABI Research's recent analysis Connected Vehicle Cloud Platforms (AN-1999), embedded connectivity will give rise to an increased use of over-the-air (OTA) updates to maintain the relevance of a vehicle throughout its lifetime; updating user interfaces and experiences, and adding new features without inconveniencing the driver. This trend, in tandem with the increasing use of modular hardware architectures; allowing individual hardware components to be swapped out in favor of more recent innovations, necessitates that we consider what long-term prospects there are for the infotainment aftermarket - a market which has forever relied on the demand by consumers to update their aging vehicles.
