Description
Greece is one of the least affluent members of the European Union, but is still richer than its immediate neighbours. GDP is US$312.0 billion in 2011, with a 4.9% fall predicted this year. The economy is expected to see only modest growth from 2014 onwards.
In 2010, it was revealed that the country's budget deficit in 2009 was 12.7%, four times the EU limit. The government is attempting to tackle the corruption and tax evasion which have led to this.
Imports supply approximately 93% of the domestic market. In 2009, total imports of medical devices amounted to US$1,357.3 million. In 2009, imports and exports fell by 9%. In the 12 months to March 2011, imports fell a further 36.7%.and exports fell 3.4% in US dollar terms
A 110 billion euro (US$142.6 billion) EU bailout plan for Greece funded by the EU and IMF, running to 2014, was ratified in May 2010. In June 2011, Greece agreed austerity measures, a "medium term fiscal plan", in return, giving them an additional year to pay back the loan agreed in 2010. The money was meant to be released in September 2011 but all EU members have yet to agree to this.
Austerity measures were agreed in December 2010 and June 2011. The continuing austerity drive is making the government increasingly unpopular. The 2010 cuts included the government aiming to trim 5 billion euros off the deficit by increasing taxes and reducing health and defence spending. There is a strong possibility of default on the loan making the market a less attractive investment area.
China, keen to gain a foothold in Europe and a gateway to the Balkan peninsular, announced 14 euro trade deals worth billions of euros, and its support for Greece in June 2010.
