Biochips (Industry forecasts for 2012 & 2017)
|
Abstract
US demand to rise 9.9% annually though 2012
The US market for biochip products and services will increase 9.9 percent per
year to $2.5 billion in 2012. Microarrays will sustain the largest portion of
product demand based on their consumable nature and expanding applications in
drug discovery, life science research, and clinical and forensic testing. DNA
chips will continue to lead microarray sales, spurred by widening use in the
identification and testing of potential new therapies and diagnostic targets.
However, laboratory and protein microarrays will provide faster growth
opportunities as the focus of drug discovery and life science research
activities shifts from genomics to proteomics.
Reagents & consumables to be fastest growing segment
Demand for biochip reagents and related consumables will increase at a fast
pace as gene expression, genotyping and protein analysis investigations become
increasingly complex. Fluorescent biomarkers, which identify disease pathways,
evaluate the effectiveness of potential therapies, and quantify drug toxicity,
will command the strongest growth opportunities.
The market for biochip instrumentation will expand moderately as
pharmaceutical and other life science laboratories upgrade equipment
capabilities to accommodate advanced genomic and protein analysis.
Multi-functional workstations that combine sample preparation, hybridization
and detection will generate the fastest gains based on performance and
convenience advantages.
Microarray analysis software will build demand as advancing technology
increases the amount and complexity of data obtained from genomic and
proteomic investigations. The best growth opportunities in this product group
will exist in analytical programs that enable experimental data to be compared
with information contained in large, publicly available databases developed by
academic institutions, government agencies and trade groups.
Lastly, biochip service revenues will rise at a strong pace as rapidly
changing technology expands the need of pharmaceutical and other life science
researchers for functional and technical support. Changing product development
strategies in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical diagnostic
industries, coupled with anticipated increases in the availability of
government funding for agricultural, environmental and epidemiological
research, will boost revenue opportunities in this segment.
Study coverage
Details on these and other findings are included in the new Freedonia industry
study, Biochips. The study presents historical demand data (1997, 2002 and
2007) plus forecasts for 2012 and 2017 by biochip technology, product,
service, application and market. The study also considers market environment
factors, details industry structure, evaluates company market share and
profiles leading competitors.
