Abstract

After almost a decade of development, the 10-Gbit/s Ethernet (10GE) market is now poised for rapid growth. The main barrier to earlier wide-scale adoption of 10GE - the prohibitive cost of optical modules and switches - has been overcome, with a clear path to 10GE deployment now in sight.

The data center has become the leading application for 10GE, along with increased deployment of carrier Ethernet services. Most high-density GE switches now come with 10GE uplinks; 24- and 48-port 10GE switches are readily available; and the first 10GE network interface cards (NICs) are shipping with twisted-pair interfaces. In the wide-area network, 10GE offers significant cost benefits over alternative technologies such as Sonet/SDH, and several carriers have already committed to 10GE deployments, with more sure to follow.

Equipment manufacturers had identified the high cost and power demands of 10GE optical modules and physical layer (PHY) devices as key barriers to making equipment more affordable for carrier and enterprise customers. Optical module and PHY vendors have responded to this challenge with devices that cost less to manufacture and use less power. As a result of these component advances, 10GE system prices are now tumbling, and port shipments are rising, as the per-user price of 10GE backbone connectivity falls.

10-Gbit/s Ethernet Components: The Market Takes Shape delivers a comprehensive assessment of 10GE optical modules and PHY devices, along with integrated switch devices for the 10GE market. It not only provides detailed information on components and vendors - of interest to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and chip makers - but also offers insights into how the overall market for 10GE systems and components is likely to develop - of interest to a wide audience, including carriers and investors.

The report provides a complete competitive analysis of 41 different vendors that currently supply 10GE optical modules and 10GE PHY devices. In-depth product comparison charts provide more than 3,000 data points to compare and contrast offerings by more than a dozen parameters, including power consumption, price, and current availability.

Report Scope and Structure

10-Gbit/s Ethernet Components: The Market Takes Shape is structured as follows:

Section I is an introduction to the report, with complete report key findings.

Section II presents an overview of trends in the 10GE market, including information on product deployments, leading 10GE applications, and standards initiatives.

Section III focuses on the 10GE switching sector, particularly on integrated switching devices.

Section IV analyzes the 10GE optical module market, detailing multi-source agreements (MSAs) in place and providing a complete accounting of all form factors in use for 10GE.

Section V provides a complete competitive analysis of 24 vendors that currently supply 10GE optical modules.

Section VI analyzes the eight different types of 10GE PHY devices on the market.

Section VII offers a complete competitive analysis of 17 vendors that currently manufacture 10GE PHY devices.

Appendices A and B provide complete product data for all available 10GE optical modules and PHY devices, respectively.

10-Gbit/s Ethernet Components: The Market Takes Shape is essential reading for a wide range of industry participants, including the following:

  • Telecom equipment manufacturers: Which component vendors are taking the lead in 10GE product availability? Which suppliers hold the advantage in delivering the price/performance and power consumption targets you need? Which products are out now, and which are still vaporware? Are your suppliers stepping up to meet your anticipated timetable for 10GE products?
  • 10GE component manufacturers: Are you ahead of the curve in 10GE deployment, or are you falling behind? Which product areas present the most attractive opportunities? How is demand for 10GE optical modules and PHY devices likely to develop in the systems market?
  • Network operators: How will 10GE' s ramp-up affect your supply-chain relationships? When can you expect to see meaningful cost reductions from your suppliers because of lower component costs, and how big a cost benefit will you get? Which vendors will be in the best position to deliver the products you need to build your next-generation network?
  • Investors: Which suppliers are in the best position to capture market share in this important telecom industry sector? When will this sector begin to show meaningful and sustainable growth?
