Key View: In the short term, operators will continue focusing on expanding their 4G networks and by upgrading late-adopters to newer mobile data plans in order to grow their revenues. 5G services, while made available to the public for non-commercial trials in November 2020, will unlikely bring in significant consumer revenues for operators given the still-low levels of disposable incomes and the lack of a solid, localised consumer use-case. Instead, we view that there is stronger potential for application in Vietnam's growing manufacturing sector, with 5G underpinning the potential automation of complex processes owing to its low-latency ability. We view the privatisation process favourably in attracting more foreign capital into the sector, although this appears to be delayed once again.
