Bacterial culture refers to the process of multiplication of bacterial cells in a culture medium which is carried out under controlled laboratory conditions. Different bacterial species require different laboratory conditions for optimal replication. Further, the bacteria can be cultured by two methods-the aerobic culture and the anaerobic culture. Most of the species of bacteria mainly grow in the presence of oxygen, such as those present on the skin surface or in the upper respiratory tract, which is known as aerobic culture. On the other hand, some species are naturally found in low oxygen regions, such as in deep wounds or abscesses, which is known as anaerobic culture.

Bacterial cell cultures have wide applications in the field of healthcare and biotechnology research which include disease diagnosis, genetic manipulation, epidemiological study, and others. These bacterial cell cultures can be used in the diagnosis of various diseases which are caused due to bacteria and others microbial infections. The diagnosis process includes the sample collection from infectious sites and culturing them to carry out further analysis. These samples are mainly collected from the urine, blood, sputum, and stools. According to the Urology Care Foundation, urinary tract infections (UTIs) cause more than 8.1 million visits to health care providers each year and about 60% of women and 12% of men will have at least one UTI during their lifetime.
