According to Corero, the DDoS attacks are expected to grow to approximately 17 million by 2020, with an average attack size approaching 1Gbps. This alarming growth in the number of network attacks is expected to be a significant driver for the adoption of DDoS protection solutions. The threat of DDoS is driven by ready access to easy-to-use tools and by a more comprehensive criminal understanding of its potential for profit through extortion. These attacks directly target business systems and individuals, which could potentially lead to enormous financial and personal losses. This further increases the importance of a robust DDoS protection tool.
- According to Cloudflare, the financial cost of a DDoS is significant as falling victim to a DDoS attack can cost an organization of around USD 100,000 for every hour the strike lasts, further fueling the demand for DDoS protection solutions. It is also reported that a significant number of unplanned datacenters outages have been due to cybercrime (DDoS) attacks, further driving the demand for DDoS protection solutions in data centers. - Amazon said its AWS Shield service mitigated the largest DDoS attack ever recorded, stopping a 2.3 Tbps attack in mid-February 2020. The incident was disclosed in the company's AWS Shield Threat Landscape, a report detailing web attacks mitigated by Amazon's AWS Shield protection service. The report was not able to identify the targeted AWS customer but was able to conclude that the attack was carried out using hijacked CLDAP web servers and caused three days of significant threat for its AWS Shield staff. CLDAP (Connection-less Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) is an alternative to the older LDAP protocol and is used to connect, search, and modify Internet-shared directories.
- Since the beginning of 2020, due to the COVID-2019 pandemic, life has shifted almost entirely to the Web. People worldwide are now working, studying, and shopping online like never before. This is reflected in the goals of recent DDoS attacks, with the most targeted resources in first quarter of 2020 being websites of medical organizations, delivery services, and gaming and educational platforms. For instance, the food delivery services Lieferando (Germany) and Thuisbezorgd (Netherlands) found themselves in a more awkward situation. DDoS attacks on both companies meant that although they could accept orders, they could not process them and had to return customers' money. The cybercriminals targeting Lieferando demanded 2 BTC (over USD 13,000) to halt the DDoS.

BFSI is Expected to Hold a Significant Share
- The BFSI sector is one of the critical infrastructure segments that suffers from several data breaches and cyber-attacks, owing to the large customer base that the industry serves and the financial information at stake. The financial service institutions have been identified four times more susceptible to cyberattacks than in other sectors, which is expected to drive the demand for such solutions. DDoS attacks can make banking websites unavailable, resulting in reputation damage, lost revenues, and a loss in customer confidence. DDoS attacks commonly used against large business organizations or banks, which could cause problems with a business reputation if users do not know why a website or service is down.
- In February 2020, the Australian Cyber Security Center (ACSC) warned that Australia's financial sector should brace for the potential of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. - In May 2020, Radware had helped to lead Turkish bank Garanti BBVA maintain availability and security during two major crises in the past six months, a history-making volumetric attack followed soon after by the disruption associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. In October 2019, Radware played a significant role in helping Garanti BBVA maintain service level availability as massive DDoS attacks disrupted internet access throughout Turkey. During the campaign, the bank faced a 700-900 Mpps volumetric attack that lasted for almost 36 hours. Radware also played a prominent role in helping the bank maintain compliance with stringent Turkish security regulations on financial institutions as it managed a sharp increase in the number of remote employees in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- South African banks have been experiencing a constant campaign of distributed DDoS attacks as part of rising ransom-driven incidents in the country throughout October 2019. The South African Banking Risk Information Centre gave repeated warnings for the banks in the country regarding the repeated attacks of this nature, and that ransom notes had been delivered to several staff email addresses. These attacks appear to have begun sometime early in the month. The DDoS attacks are expected to be focusing on the public-facing elements of South African banks. This attack type is not a data breach risk to sensitive customer data or financial information, as its primary aim is to knock bank servers offline by pestering them with constant requests from thousands of devices.
North America is Expected to Hold Major Share
- The United States also accounts for the origination for 30% of the global DDoS attacks, which is likely to increase attacks against the country's end-user industries, further driving the demand for DDoS protection solutions. Moreover, cyberattacks in the North American region, especially in the United States, are rising rapidly. They have reached an all-time high, primarily owing to the rapidly increasing number of connected devices in the region. Attackers in mid-March 2020 tried to disable the website of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The attack's purpose seemed to deprive citizens of access to official data about the COVID-19 pandemic and measures taken against it. Unknown cyber criminals spread misinformation in social networks and via text and e-mail about the introduction of a nationwide quarantine in the United States. The attempt failed where the HHS website continued to function, despite the increased load.
