Key View: Thailand's banking and financial services industry is well developed within the region. The medium term outlook is bright, with the opening up of the industry to outside investment as part of the Association of South-East Asian Nations Economic Community and the ongoing focus on deregulation, which will likely spur consolidation in the banking and insurance sectors. In the near-term, however, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic will trigger a severe economic downturn in this heavily tourism- dependent country. The risk of a collapse in small- and medium-sized enterprises, a likely increase in non-performing loans together with shrunken household incomes and weak investor confidence will constrain growth prospects across all financial service sectors.
