The roadside drug testing refers to looking for traces of drugs in the body using samples of urine, blood, sweat or breath. Passing of drug testing or drug screening tests means that the drug might not be present in the body anymore or presence is in very small amount. This type of roadside drug testing is conducted to ensure safety of the motor vehicle drivers, as influence of drugs and/or alcohol hinders with clear sight and quick mental function.
Roadside drug testing is often done either by taking sample saliva or breath of the vehicle driver. The device, which is known as breathalyzer, uses deep-lung breath of the tester and thus, detects presence of alcohol in blood. Saliva is more effective at identifying most recent drug usage. However, saliva-based drug testing has the drawback that it is neither Food and Drug Administration approved for use with Department of Telecommunications nor federally mandated drug testing.
