KSM 22.01.28

In the past, we have sought to distinguish the VM-based vRAN markets as VNFs and container-based vRAN markets as CNFs. Considering that containers do technically qualify as VNFs, and most VNF vendors have containerization of network functions on their radars anyway, we had to relook at the earlier characterizations.

This report concentrates on the market for vRAN.

The report now considers two types of vRANs:

  • Virtual machine (VM)-based vRANs
  • Container-based vRANs

Scope

The Executive Summary presents the key discernible trends in the virtual RAN market along with a high-level view of the market size.

This chapter, Virtualization of Network Functions details the origins of VM and container-based network functions in general. The distinction between the two is detailed in order to understand how the perceived limitations in one type of virtualization led to the evolution of another type.

This chapter, Virtualization of the RAN, places virtualization in the realms of the RAN network function. The RAN presents one of the most critical network functions of the mobile telephone network. The proof of virtualization gaining mainstream status can be delivered convincingly only when these network functions can be meaningfully rendered in the virtual mode. To understand the journey of virtualization of the RAN, it is important to understand how the RAN has evolved through successive generations.

The chapter, Telco Profiles, examines the approach adopted by leading telcos vis-à-vis virtualization of the RAN.

This chapter, Solution Provider Profiles, identifies and categorises the vendors or solution providers; and analyses their initiatives in the context of the network functions covered. It lays special emphasis on container-based vRAN initiatives of these vendors. The chapter includes the profiles of key solution provider companies.

This chapter, Quantitative Forecasts, presents the quantitative forecasts of the VM and container-based vRAN market broken down by different criteria. The chapter also provides and overview of the research methodology and a snapshot of the report taxonomy.
