Amphoteric surfactants are surface-active molecules that have both acidic and alkaline characteristics. There are two types of surfactants: betaines and real amphoteric surfactants based on fatty alkyl imidazolines. Since amphoteric surfactants have an ionic charge, they can change between anionic, isoelectric neutral, and cationic characteristics depending on the pH. They are stable in electrolytes, acids, alkalis, and hard water.
Application-wise, amphoteric surfactants are most commonly used in detergents and soap manufacturing. The industrial revenue of the soap and cleaning compound manufacturing industry in Canada was about $4.7 billion in 2021, according to the Government of Canada.
Other possible applications include textile finishing auxiliaries, dyeing auxiliaries, dispersants, and dry-cleaning agents. For instance, India's domestic clothing and textile sector provides around 2.3% of the country's GDP, 13% of industrial production, and 12% of exports. As stated by Invest India, India accounts for 4% of the worldwide textile and clothing trade. Although its price is a little expensive, some of the benefits listed above make the application sufficient in some situations to compensate for the shortcomings of the high price. Conversely, stringent regulations are likely to limit their demand throughout the forecast period.
The largest amount of amphoteric surfactants is used in personal care products, as it is a memorable component of skin and hair care products and many others. In 2021, India's Beauty and Personal Care industry reached above USD 10 billion with an expected annual growth rate of 5-6% as revealed by the Ministry of Economy and Industry. The usage of amphoteric surfactants in the personal care segment is growing because of rising urbanization, higher employment of women, shift in their living standards, and improved understanding of personal cleansing merchandise. For instance, as per the U.S. Department of Labor Blog, the main demographic of women expected to contribute to the increase of the overall number of women in the labor force till 2031 is 25 and older. Women in the prime working age range of 25 to 54 will enter the labor force during the next decade, adding around 2.9 million new workers, majorly impacting the personal care segment.
Owing to increased demand from countries such as China and India, the Asia-Pacific region is projected to dominate the market for amphoteric surfactants over the forecast period.
