Hydrogen is a naturally occurring and most abundant element in the universe. It contains three times more energy than fossil fuels of a similar volume, is a promising fuel for the energy transition, and can be produced at a scale using renewable energy to achieve the climate pledge of net zero emissions by 2050. It has potential applications in several sectors including electricity generation, transportation, mobility, and other industries. Global hydrogen demand is on the rise and to meet that demand, several hydrogen projects have been announced around the world.

‘The Global Hydrogen Projects Database’ contains over 1,000 installed and planned hydrogen projects. This database provides an overview of the key partnerships, agreements, alliances, MOUs, and deals formed in the hydrogen value chain, followed by the details of mergers and acquisitions from 2021-2022. A regional split is followed by a country-wise split in which projects are segmented according to their intended end-use in power generation, refining, ammonia, methanol, iron and steel, mobility, grid injection, heating, biofuels, synfuels, and other industries. Details of the starting and decommissioning years, type of hydrogen produced, type of technology implemented, project sizes, and the current status of the projects have also been incorporated into the database.

  • Global hydrogen demand has increased with a CAGR of 2%, from 60 Mt to 90 Mt since the start of this century, and is expected to be approximately 500 Mt by 2050.
  • Europe is emerging as the leader in hydrogen production and usage as within the EU, there are more than 750 announced projects from all parts of the value chain that are expected to enter operation by 2025.
  • The Hydrogen Global Projects Database consists of 1,172 projects out of which there are 414 installed projects whereas 746 are currently in the pipeline.
  • From 2022-2025, there are 257 green hydrogen projects around the world that amount to 31,524.72 MW.
