A Photochromic Optical Resin Monomer is a specialized chemical compound used in the production of photochromic lenses and optical materials that change color or tint in response to light exposure, particularly ultraviolet (UV) light. When incorporated into lenses, these monomers enable the material to dynamically adjust its transparency, becoming darker when exposed to sunlight and returning to a clear state in the absence of UV light. This feature enhances visual comfort and protection by automatically adapting to varying light conditions, reducing glare, and blocking harmful UV rays.
There are two main technologies for obtaining photochromic lenses. One is base-change technology: by mixing light-sensitive color-changing dyes with resin monomers, the monomers are solidified by casting to obtain a substrate with color-changing ability; the other is film-change technology: the photochromic material is evenly dispersed in the coating material, and it is coated on the lens substrate by "dip coating" or "spin coating" to form a color-changing film layer, giving the lens photochromic ability. The color change reaction of the "film-change" technology occurs on the surface of the material. The color-changing layer is very small and has a high concentration. It has the advantages of fast color change speed, deep color and rapid fading recovery, but the process is complicated and the technical level is high. The "film-change" technology is mostly used in mid-to-high-end color-changing materials.
