Automotive OEMs have many compelling reasons to install connectivity in their products. Not least of these is the potential to avoid warranty claims by implementing improved preventative maintenance regimes based on telematics that deliver vehicle condition data. At the same time, political imperatives to increase both safety on the roads and transport system efficiency are gaining momentum. They are driving authorities around the world to encourage - or mandate - the deployment and use of vehicle-to-everything (V2X) for safety and traffic management.

The arrival of 5G - quicker than many predicted - brings with it enhanced capabilities for C-V2X using the dedicated spectrum set aside for intelligent transportation applications and network-based automotive applications of many kinds. But V2X - and vehicle connectivity more generally - is an extremely complicated topic. The number of standards bodies, industry associations, and technology vendors is very large. There are also large vested interests - political as well as commercial - and a long legacy of trial after trial, with little mass-market adoption. The questions of which players will pay for infrastructure deployment and which ones will make money from what services remain difficult ones to answer. Still, Tractica expects the markets for in-vehicle V2X components to grow rapidly from 2019 as automotive OEMs begin to build C-V2X and 802.11p connectivity into new vehicles. The annual value of the total hardware and software component market for connected vehicles is expected to peak at $39.2 billion in 2023 and remain above $35 billion annually from that point until 2030.
