Bio-Ketones Market

The future of the global bio-ketones market looks promising with opportunities in the paints and coatings, automobile, infrastructure, and pharmaceutical markets. The global bio-ketones market is expected to reach an estimated $5.1 billion by 2035 from $2.7 billion in 2027 with a CAGR of 10.7% from 2027 to 2035. The major drivers for this market are growing demand from the paints & coatings industry and surging interest in cosmetics and personal care products.

  • Lucintel forecasts that, within the product type category, bio PEEK will remain the largest segment over the forecast period due to its increasing adoption in the automotive industry as it helps in weight reduction and improved fuel efficiency of vehicles.
  • Within the application category, automobile will remain the largest segment over the forecast period due to rising automobile production and increasing demand for advanced vehicle components.
  • In terms of regions, APAC will remain the largest region over the forecast period due to a more sustainable and resource-efficient industrial landscape and rising demand from the pharmaceutical industry in the region.

Emerging Trends in Bio-Ketones Market

The market for bio-ketones is expected to move beyond the laboratory and into limited commercial markets by 2025-2027. Companies are improving and increasing fermentation processes and reaching maturity in the production of bio-based solvents, coatings, fragrances and specialties. Of the various routes to bio-based ketones, market uncertainties and the cost of large-scale purification will likely determine the routes that progress beyond the pilot plant stage.

  • Sustainability: Renewable Content procurement will slowly phase out and be replaced by Carbon Content procurement by 2025, and European buyers will align to the requirements of the Recommendation (2023/301/UE) which stipulates a minimum of 42.5% renewable energy. When bio-based feedstocks are not in land use competition, bio-ketones can replace fossil based. Lifecycle emissions will be of increasing importance to buyers.
  • Biotechnology: The ability of engineered microorganisms to ferment sugars (or waste carbohydrates and glycerol) to acetone and related products, particularly in the context of commercial scale processes, has started to gain industry attention. Notably, a few companies involved in this space announced pilot activities for 2025 to 2026. Improvements in process economics through increased product titters, as well as ease of product recovery, are expected to further improve competitiveness in the next 3-5 years.
  • Circular Economy: In an effort to improve raw material and energy utilization as well as to reduce process waste, a variety of chemical platforms derived from agricultural and forestry residues, and food processing residues are also being explored. The recent updating of the European Union Waste Framework Directive to set targets for the reduction of food waste for the year 2030 has renewed interest in the development of chemicals derived from residues.
  • Functional Products: In the coming years, we expect more innovative uses of bio-based solvents in various industries as opposed to simply replacing solvents with bio-based alternatives. We expect bio-based solvents to be used in differentiating high performance coatings and adhesives as well as in personal care and flavor industries. Low-VOC systems will continue to be developed and introduced to the market by 2025, to comply with stricter emission standards. The more premium and innovative applications of bio-ketones will enable a decrease in the price premium of bio-based solvents.
  • Regional Supply: The 2020's supply disruptions impacted the Just-in-time supply chain and increasing numbers of customers in North America and Europe have adopted a dual-supply or local-supply strategy. Modular facilities placed near end markets and feedstocks will be constructed in the next 2-7 years, thereby, creating price differentiation.

It is expected that bio-ketones will supplement the petrochemical industry and improve the environmental profile of some industries. The first movers in the industry are expected to be companies that provide both the biotechnology and the process and application know-how to customers. Improvements in the biotechnology and decreased costs will be required for large-scale replacement of petrochemical feedstocks.

Recent Developments in the Bio-Ketones Market

Bio-ketones is focused on finishing its product development and is in the initial stages of commercialization. The target timeframe for first customer sales is 2025-2027. During this time frame we also expect other companies to launch similar products. At Lucintel, we are noticing similar trends in the marketplace. Currently, clients are looking for evidence to support that a replacement product meets the same claims (e.g. lifecycle, purity, supply) as the product it is replacing, prior to making a shift from petrochemical-based products.

  • Global Bioenergies: This company has a demonstration plant in France (2025) to produce 2,000 tons of bio-isobutene (one of several bio-ketones and solvents). Large scale production may reduce costs for industrial customers.
  • Strategic Alliances: Combinations of specialty chemical and biotechnology companies are being formed to convert carbon into ketone intermediates. A collaboration between Lanzatech and another company in 2025 demonstrated the increased interest in the use of carbon in synthesis in catalysis. These alliances, fuse the fields of biotechnology, engineering, and business, therefore, improving the time and cost required for the commercialization of new products.
  • Technology: There have been recent advancements in enzyme and microbe-based biocatalysts that allow for the production of ketone intermediates. Pilot plants have demonstrated the ability to produce greater than 100 grams of ketones per liter, and it is anticipated that these improvements will facilitate the commercialization of ketone intermediates.
  • Funding: In 2025, public funding of industrial biotechnology demonstration projects continued in Europe and North America. Improvements in biotechnology reduced the cost and risk of first-of-a-kind (1st) bioprocessing plants, and improved the acceptance of biologically produced intermediates by potential customers in the personal care, adhesives, and coatings industries.
  • Customer Acceptance: In 2026, bio-based ketones and other solvents began customer qualification in the pharmaceutical and coatings industries. Depending on the results of the qualification, bio-based ketones are expected to be used in commercial productions starting in 2027 and continuing to 2030. The primary concern for customers is the reliable and consistent supply of the bio-based product. The goal of producers is to manufacture bio-based ketones that meet the same characteristics as the petrochemically derived products.

Over the next several years it is expected that the market for bio-based ketones will grow and suppliers of scalable and reliable bio-based ketones will be better positioned to capture market share. Improving legislation and customer demands will better position bio-based products.

Strategic Growth Opportunities in the Bio-Ketones Market

Bio-ketones are expected to transition from laboratory to industry between 2024 and 2026, as they are adopted by industries seeking lower carbon solvents and building blocks. Stricter emissions standards and the establishment of policies to encourage the use of bio-based products and processes are expected to further enhance the attractiveness of the market. Lucintel expects the market to gain traction in the coming years.

  • Bio-based Solvents: Renewable ketones such as methyl ethyl ketone and acetone have the potential to partially or wholly replace petroleum-based ketones in solvents and cleaning agents in paints, varnishes and other coatings. Renewable energy targets set by the European Commission are expected to strengthen the market.
  • Sustainable Aviation Chemicals: Bio-Ketones can help create pathways to produce more sustainable aviation fuels. The United States set a goal to produce 3 billion gallons of sustainable aviation fuel by the year 2030 and retained that goal in April 2025. Increased demand for fuel will create an incentive for larger biorefineries. Continued improvement in feedstock will help lower the cost to produce biofuels.
  • Specialty Chemicals: Ketones can help produce value added chemicals such as fragrances and pharmaceuticals. In February 2025, the European Commission's "Clean Industrial Deal" created a funding resource of €100 billion. Improved value and broader customer base will help the specialty chemical market over the next five years.
  • On-site Manufacturing: The production of bio-based ketones in a location near the feedstock will help eliminate the need to import petrochemicals and help reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions from transport. India increased its ethanol blending target to 19.6% in March 2025. The same policy will help encourage new bio-based processing units.
  • Low-carbon Customer Contracts: Supply and demand for renewable chemical raw materials will continue to grow. The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification system in June 2025 reported over 60,000 certified entities. Suppliers of bio-based chemical raw materials produced under a customer contract will be able to charge a premium.

Suppliers should focus on delivering high quality feedstock to help meet customer demands for low-carbon chemicals. The best opportunities to sell bio-based chemical feedstocks will come from forming partnerships with customers who will help differentiate the product from the competition. In the next three to five years we will see more commercialization of bio-based ketones for use in high volume as well as specialty chemical markets.

Bio-Ketones Market Drivers and Challenges

Technological, economic, and environmental legislation influences Bio-ketone production and consumption. The use of Bio-based Chemicals has the potential to replace Fossil-based Chemicals (including Fossil-based Ketones). According to Lucintel, the commercialization of Bio-based Chemicals is dependent on several factors including, the status of the industry, availability of raw materials and revenues. Established Fossil-based Chemicals face Bio-based Chemicals competition. This includes aspects like price differences, Bio-based Chemicals' commercialization, and the availability of consistent and reliable standards.

The factors responsible for driving this market include:

  • Increased Demand for Eco-friendly Chemicals: There is increasing awareness among consumers and businesses regarding the advantages of raw materials sourced from renewable and/or low carbon sources for the production of various coatings, solvents, and adhesives and personal care products. In 2025, several large and multinational companies, as well as other key players in the industry, announced their net-zero commitments. In the coming three to five years, to meet their net-zero goals and other sustainability objectives, companies are expected to replace traditional chemical feedstocks with bio-ketones.
  • Advances in Technology: Continuous improvement in various research fields (e.g., synthetic and catalytic bioconversions, fermentation, and other bioprocessing technologies) is expected to enhance the competitiveness of bio-based products. Commercial bioprocessing facilities in 2025 adopted a range of technologies to enhance process and product control, as well as reduce process losses.
  • Amended Laws and Regulations: Enactment of supporting regulations and frameworks to promote the bioeconomy has gained momentum. Alignment of laws and regulations of various countries with the goals of the Paris Agreement increased in 2025.
  • Sufficient Supply of Biomass: Renewable feedstocks for the production of bio-based chemical products are abundant.
  • Product Innovation and Application Expansion: Bio-ketones have seen innovation to create specific varieties for use in various industries. In 2026, the use of bio-based solvents and additives in the manufacturing of coatings, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals increased. Innovations like these increase the variety of markets for bio-ketones, improve acceptance by customers, and facilitate competition in markets beyond environmental protection.

The challenges facing this market include:

  • High Costs of Production: In 2025, the high costs of production for bio-based chemicals, in comparison to their petroleum based counterparts, limited the market. It is expected that during the next three to five years the costs of production for bio-based chemicals would not be as high as that of their petroleum based equivalents, and thus their use would not be prevalent. High costs of production are attributable to the requirements for specialized equipment and the use of expensive feedstocks.
  • Limited Feedstocks: Renewable feedstocks are often seasonal and have other uses, making them unreliable. The volatile nature of the global market for trade goods in 2025, affected the costs of feedstocks and concentrated producers to specific, high yield, areas. These conditions led to increased establishment of local biorefineries.
  • Limited Standardization and Market Recognition: Currently, there is a lack of uniformity in defining bio-ketones, and in establishing methods to assess the life cycle and performance of bio-ketones. In 2025, many companies refused to purchase bio-based materials unless the companies providing the materials could provide evidence supporting an assessment of the materials' carbon footprints. Under these circumstances, it is expected that companies will take a wait-and-see approach with respect to the purchase of bio-based materials for 3 to 5 years. It is anticipated that there will be improvements in standards and customer acceptance during this period.

This situation will, however, favorably impact the bio-ketones market. The same situation is expected with respect to the market for renewable chemicals. The same sustainability goals which drive demand for renewable chemicals can promote the demand for bio-ketones. The same can occur with respect to innovation in technology, especially if there is a concurrent improvement in feedstocks, regulatory policies, or both. Diversification of feedstocks would also be expected to promote innovation and market expansion. New, performance-enhancing applications for bio-ketones, similar to the situation with specialty chemicals, can be expected. Improvements in large-scale production of bio-ketones, while reducing the cost of production and improving energy efficiency, will foster the environmental benefits of the product. Companies which achieve these objectives will obtain and sustain a position in the marketplace for bio-ketones.
