Ventilator Market

The future of the global ventilator market looks promising with opportunities in the hospital & clinic, home care setting, ambulatory care center, and emergency medical service markets. The global ventilator market is expected to reach an estimated $10.1 billion by 2035 from $6.1 billion in 2027 with a CAGR of 5.5% from 2027 to 2035. The major drivers for this market are the increasing prevalence of respiratory diseases, the rising demand for critical care solutions, and the growing adoption of advanced ventilator technologies.

  • Lucintel forecasts that, within the type category, intensive care ventilators is expected to witness higher growth over the forecast period due to increasing need for ICU admission with ventilator support.
  • Within the care setting category, hospitals & clinics is expected to witness the highest growth over the forecast period due to influx of respiratory disease across all levels of the health system.
  • In terms of regions, North America is expected to witness the highest growth over the forecast period due to well developed and sophisticated critical care services and high rates of respiratory illness.

Emerging Trends in Ventilator Market

The market is transforming to incorporate connected, energy efficient, home and ambulatory based respiratory care. Between 2025 and 2027, it is expected that the majority of fleets will be replaced. Expanding homecare will also drive the market. Portable, sensor based, and other technologies will reduce the total cost of ownership of respiratory care devices. Lucintel predicts that between 2025 and 2027 the focus will be on the clinical utility of these devices, in addition to other considerations.

  • Portable Respiratory Care: Portable Respiratory Care Devices will continue to be adopted by homecare agencies. Improvements in battery technology will increase the mobility of these devices and allow care to occur away from the bedside. Demand will be driven by the increased focus on care in the home and other alternative site care models.
  • Connected Ventilation: Manufacturers of respiratory care devices will incorporate sensors to provide real time data to the cloud, allowing care to occur away from the point of service. The focus of care will be on the respiratory system. Other care and support systems will be incorporated into care devices to increase the efficiency of care.
  • Energy Efficient Design: Hospitals will seek devices that minimize energy consumption and increase efficiency. This will be driven by several initiatives including a focus on the total cost of ownership and care, as well as other initiatives to increase sustainability. Devices will be required to meet stringent standards before they can be adopted by hospitals.
  • Supply Diversification: Procurement teams are seeking more supply options beyond single country sourcing. India's medical device PLI is accelerating the local manufacture of medical devices and enhancing supply chain security. The use of PLI schemes will encourage regional manufacturing and enhance supply chain resiliency.
  • Ventilation: Software is allowing ventilators to adapt support based on patient condition. This has allowed ventilators to shift into higher end product segmentation. Use of advanced clinical automation in product segmentation will continue to increase.

Most medical equipment companies have the capacity to design and manufacture medical equipment. The market is dividing and uneven, with greater opportunities in higher-end products, and more constrained growth in replacements in the high-volume but low-margin critical care segment. Manufacturers should differentiate their products and engineering services, and tailor supply to regional needs. Documented evidence of clinical outcomes will enable more effective positioning of products for higher segmentation. Localizing and integrating supply to cover the range from intensive care to community will improve operating flexibility and ease.

Recent Developments in the Ventilator Market

During the outlook period, we expect the ventilator market to experience growth as medical facilities replace older models and manufacturers update their product offerings to include more connectivity. We anticipate demand for ventilators to increase in areas outside of intensive care units. We believe a larger portion of the available financing will be directed towards the development of ventilators that feature greater design flexibility and reduce the overall size of the production equipment.

  • Production Expansion: It was reported in 2025 that the Swedish-based subsidiary of Getinge would be expanding the production capacity of the Servo-air and Servo-u ventilators. It was expected that this would increase Getinge's production capacity of the ventilators.
  • Technology Launch: ResMed released the third model of the AirCurve series of ventilators in 2025. Similar to the other models in the series, the AirCurve 11 features automated features, and remote monitoring capabilities.
  • Major Contract: In 2025, it was reported that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs awarded a competitive, multi-year contract to Philips for the supply of various respiratory products, worth approximately $34 million.
  • Business Partnerships: In 2025, Zoll Medical and ResMed signed a business partnership to jointly develop home-based respiratory services from the hospital. The deal combined Zoll's hospital-based acute care services with ResMed's post-discharge services. There will be increased demand for portable ventilators as various models of integrated and interdisciplinary health and social care are developed and implemented.
  • Licensing of New Ventilator Uses: In 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted several companies permission to change the labelling of their ventilators and to update the software of their ventilator products to allow for greater use of non-invasive ventilation. Over the next several years, it is expected that various modes of ventilator management will be developed and will allow for even greater use of non-invasive ventilation.

The focus of the ventilator market will be on replacement, use outside of the emergency situation, and integrated home health services. Simultaneously, there will be increased demand for advanced performance from ventilators along with other advanced features (e.g., remote management, data security, and integration with other health and medical equipment and services).

Strategic Growth Opportunities in the Ventilator Market

There is expected replacement and specialization cycle for ventilators in the foreseeable future due to continued investment in the critical care infrastructure and visible threats to respiratory health. According to Lucintel, the 2024-2026 trend is going to be the increased adoption of integrated and less- expeditious monitoring systems.

  • Home and Transport Ventilation: Accommodating non-invasive home and transport ventilation is going to become increasingly necessary to manage respiratory insufficiencies. Based on trends in CMS data, the number of chronically respiratory compromised beneficiaries is likely to increase and continue to be managed in a home and community-based environment.
  • Non-invasive Ventilation: Non-invasive home ventilation has the potential to reduce and manage respiratory compromise in a variety of chronic health conditions including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, obesity hypoventilation syndrome, and sleep disordered breathing. The WHO estimated that in 2021, 3.5 million people died as a result of COPD. If ventilatory support and related management is implemented in a cost-effective manner, it is likely to reduce unnecessary and costly hospital admissions.
  • Emerging Markets Localization: Devices can be designed and manufactured to operate with locally available components and spares to minimize lead time and cost. India's public health system in March 2025 established medical colleges beyond metropolitan areas. Governments will fund the local production of medical devices.
  • Intelligent Connected Ventilation: Connectivity allows access to software and services through subscription, leading to higher margins. In April 2025, Philips announced that more than 2.5 million of its sleep and respiratory devices were connected. In the following years, highly interoperable and functional platforms will replace standalone devices.
  • Design for Sustainability: Decrease the lifecycle costs of medical devices through design innovations and energy efficiency. Sustainability impacts will affect how medical devices are procured. In May 2025, the European Commission directed more than 6,000 businesses to disclose their ESG impacts.

There will be greater opportunities for medical device companies that integrate design thinking, manufacturing know-how and supply chain management to achieve medical device solutions that remain clinically reliable and economically justifiable. Decentralizing respiratory care will generate more opportunities in the medical device sector than increasing ICU beds.

Ventilator Market Drivers and Challenges

The international market for ventilators is dynamic due to the interplay of several global trends including advancements in technology, expansion of the respiratory disease industry, and an improving global economy. From a market perspective, Lucintel has identified the Innovation and Intensification trends within the Healthcare market as the most strategic opportunities. These will be the result of a host of emerging economies investing in medical technologies and the high unmet medical needs of the developing world. Traditionally, obstacles to market such as high cost and limited reimbursement, an immature medical infrastructure and a lack of qualified healthcare workers have restricted the growth of the ventilator market.

The factors responsible for driving this market include:

  • Rising Respiratory Disease Burden: Rising rates of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, pneumonia and other respiratory infections have increased the demand for both invasive and non-invasive ventilation. Additionally, as the global population continues to age there is an increasing need for long term respiratory support and care. In 2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) identified chronic respiratory diseases as a leading global public health concern. It is estimated that, in the next 5 to 10 years, WHO member countries will further develop their national health systems, especially to improve care for the international public good. During this period there will be a greater focus on intensive care and long term respiratory care. Additionally, there will be a greater emphasis on improving emergency care systems.
  • Connected Ventilation Technology: Many home medical devices have technology that allows clinicians to remotely monitor and automatically adjust a patient's ventilation based on the patient's condition. The use of artificial intelligence and technology has allowed clinicians to identify when a patient is deteriorating and assist in automated alarms and other features to lessen the clinician's workload. In March 2025, many home medical devices crossed the threshold to enable continuous monitoring of multiple vitals. In the next 3-5 years, due to improved integration with the electronic health record and improvements in telehealth, home medical devices will become standard and replacements will be continuously required.
  • Government Healthcare Spending: During the pandemic, many countries focused on increasing their domestic medical device production capabilities and creating more reliable supply chains for medical devices. As a result, many countries increased their medical device procurement. In February 2025, several countries awarded contracts to purchase ventilators with a stipulation that the equipment would be replaced with new ventilators after 8-10 years. The economic stimulus, infrastructure projects, and other investments in the medical device industry will continue to benefit emerging markets in the foreseeable future.
  • Homecare Devices: The recent developments in ventilator technologies have significantly improved their portability, minitude in size, and reduced power requirements. As a result, the use of mechanical ventilators in homecare has increased. Unlike hospital care, homecare mechanical ventilation can help improve the quality of life of patients and lessen the duration of stay in a hospital. Home mechanical ventilation is best suited for elderly and chronic patients with respiratory disorders. Improvements in the battery life of portable ventilators has enabled their use in homecare. In 2025, several portable ventilators had a battery life of at least 6 hours. In the next 3-5 years, integration of home mechanical ventilation will increase due to focus on reducing cost of care, and providing hospital level care in the home. In addition, there will be focus on improving convenience and flexibility for patients.
  • Business and Industry: Continuous advancements in science and technology enable companies to improve their products and become more competitive. Improvements in energy efficiency, simplified maintenance, and reduced noise have helped improve patient experience and care. In addition to these features, reducing the number of components and automating the control of the ventilators have helped to increase the ease of use and simplicity of the devices. These features, in combination with improvements in sensors and process automation, enabled several ventilator manufacturers to launch their next generation products in 2025. Most of these products had operating modes that consumed less than 100 watts.

The challenges facing this market include:

  • High Acquisition and Operating Costs: The cost of purchasing and operating sophisticated ventilators is considerable. Smaller hospitals and facilities in low-income countries may not be able to afford to purchase and operate the more advanced models and, therefore, rely on older models or ones that do not meet the same level of medical standards. In the procurement of ventilators in the healthcare systems in June 2025, the focus was on total cost of ownership for a period of between 5 to 10 years. It is likely that, in the next 3 to 5 years, there will be increased demand for ventilators and other medical devices with lower total cost of ownership.
  • Complex Regulatory Environment and Requirements: The devices are required to be compliant with a number of medical standards, performance requirements, and post-market surveillance. The costs to meet these requirements, especially for devices using Artificial Intelligence, are burdensome. In July 2025, there was a shift in the medical device industry to address cybersecurity of medical devices. It is likely that in the next 3 to 5 years there will be additional requirements to ensure patient safety that may advantage larger medical device manufacturers.
  • Supply Chain Limits and Skills Shortages: Manufacturing ventilators requires a long supply chain of parts (i.e. sensors, displays, motors, batteries, plastics, and microprocessors). Even with an adequate supply of these parts, lead-times may be long and sudden changes in production may not be possible. The same is true for the health care personnel required to operate and maintain ventilators. In August 2025, manufacturers of ventilators and their component parts continued to maintain safety stock of parts and some planned supply to cover 12 weeks of demand. It may be necessary to implement a range of strategies from sourcing a greater number of suppliers to using simpler control systems in order to continue manufacturing ventilators in the future.

There is growing demand for ventilators due to an increased rate of respiratory illness and other debilitating conditions. Such conditions may warrant the use of ventilators outside of hospitals. Advances in small, automated, and easy to use ventilators may lead to greater use of such devices in the home. However, financial and other constraints may limit the use of ventilators in underserved areas. Manufacturers may be able to compete in the market in the coming years by developing affordable and easy to use ventilators that have a low impact on the health care system and are backed by strong support and service infrastructure. It is anticipated that such products will become increasingly available in the market in the next 5 years.
