Companies that verify battery safety, interoperability, and energy savings will have longer customer relationships.

Uninterrupted Power Supply Market Drivers and Challenges

The growth of the uninterrupted power supply market is impacted by different factors including progress in technology, digital infrastructure, investment in the economy and the environment, and changes in the laws. The market is growing based on the high demand for reliable backup power caused by the high reliance on data centers, health care, telecommunications, and automation of industry. However, capital costs, constraints posed by batteries, risks posed by cyber and supply chains, and uncertainty in the market provide some challenges. Lucintel predicts that market competition will rely more on factors such as efficiency and scalability of power systems, intelligent monitoring, and integration of renewable energy. These trends are impacting how customers view power protection. Rather than viewing power protection as an essential but inflexible emergency measure, customers are looking for more intelligent integrated systems. It will be easier for everybody to visualize this trend if we project it from now to the years after 2025. Currently, we're seeing a demand for solutions that combine flexible backup power capabilities with intelligent power management.

The following drivers are expected to influence the uninterrupted power supply market:

  • Rising Demand for Data Centers: Cloud computing, increasing adoption of AI, and digital services has also accelerated the need for the continuous availability of electricity for data centers. In April 2025, the International Energy Agency estimated that by 2030, global consumption of electricity by data centers could reach 945 terawatt-hours; a significant increase from 2020 levels. This growth is projected to impact the need for high-availability, modular, and state of the art uninterrupted power supply systems over the next three to five years.
  • Advancements in Technology: Improvements in lithium-ion batteries, the addition of remote monitoring, smart AI diagnostics, and improvements in silicon-carbide devices and modular UPS designs are improving efficiency and lowering requirements for maintenance. In 2025, modular UPS systems reached an average operating efficiency of over 97% and thus became more appealing compared to alternatives. These improvements, combined with recent advancements in UPS systems, push the market to lower total cost of ownership, lengthen battery life, make it easier to scale capacity, and enable predictive maintenance of data centers, hospitals, factories, and telecommunication facilities for the next 3 to 5 years.
  • Regulation and Reliability: Organizations and governmental groups are developing new policies and regulations regarding the resiliency of systems and improvements in energy efficiency and the continuity of operation with a greater emphasis on power safety. With the recently adopted changes to the energy efficiency framework in the EU, 2025 started off with reinforced considerations for large, digitized, and energy intensive infrastructures. New regulations in the next 3-5 years will focus on the integration of newer technologies with safety, efficiency, emissions, and reliability standards.
  • Sustainability and Energy Transition: Focus on sustainability lowers emissions and incentivizes integration of renewable energy sources and limits waste created by batteries. In 2025 the European Commission announced that 47% of all electricity generated in Europe was from renewable energy, emphasizing the need for flexible power control systems and power management technologies. These trends will drive the need for UPS systems that can be integrated with solar energy, managed power systems, energy storage systems, and demand response services, over the next 3-5 years.
  • Industrial Automation and Manufacturing: Automated systems require consistent power to maintain production. Short interruptions in power can spoil manufactured goods and disrupt the production process. Per the International Federation of Robotics, in May 2025, more than 540,000 industrial robots were installed globally in 2023. Automation and manufacturing are becoming increasingly connected. In the next three to five years, UPS adoption is expected to rise to protect control systems, minimize downtime, fulfill quality needs, and improve manufacturing operational effectiveness.

This market faces the following challenges:

  • High Initial and Replacement Costs: UPS systems include a large initial cost of power electronics and batteries as well as equipment, cooling systems, monitoring, and a great deal of maintenance. Battery packs amount to a large cost of ownership, especially at large data centers and industrial facilities. In 2025, lithium prices returned to normal, after peaking in 2022, but volatility in pricing and supply continued to affect the economics of storage and the planning of purchases. In the next three to five years, the costs of manufacturing upgrades will be higher and will push customers to use leased UPS systems over purchased systems, as well as favor the use of modular UPS systems that allow stepwise increases in capacity.
  • Battery Supply and Performance Limitations: Most UPS reliability issues are related to batteries. These issues can include supply of raw materials, degradation, thermal management, safety, and fire risk, recycling, and logistics of replacing batteries. The International Energy Agency, in March 2025, said that 85% of global capacity for battery cell manufacturing was in China. Geographic concentration poses risks of disruption. All of these issues will affect how long it takes for batteries to be delivered, the lifetime cost of batteries, and how customers will choose to design their batteries in the future. UPS systems will likely rely heavily on battery chemistry over the next three to five years.
  • Cybersecurity and System Complexity: The more UPS equipment is connected, the more visibility and predictive maintenance UPS equipment provides, but it creates new risks due to exposure to unauthorized access, software vulnerabilities, and disruptions to a network. The Digital Operational Resilience Act was adopted by the European Union in February 2025 and, even though it targets financial institutions, other organizations may feel pressure to increase technology and operational resilience. Over the next three to five years, smaller customers may see an increase in cybersecurity costs and a decrease in the adoption of UPS equipment due to the complexity of integrating UPS systems with building management systems.

The UPS market is shifting away from traditional backup systems, to more advanced, intelligent, flexible and sustainable infrastructure. Inclined growth in the data center, automation in industrial processes, greater digital reliance, more legislation, and integrating renewable energy sources means growing demand will be sustained. For smaller organizations, high purchasing prices, battery reliance, the need for system replacements, greater cyber exposure and complexity in systems will reduce adoption. Greater deployment flexibility, improved battery options, advanced software security and financing options will give suppliers a competitive advantage. Market trends show positive growth for the next few years. More purchases will consider the value lifecycle and incorporate greater operational insight, resilience, and compliance.
